Stellar title with Rivers playing and deconstructing standards in a beautiful way, with avant touches sprinkled in throughout. Rivers remarkable ability to thread the line between the past and the future is simply stunning. These older tunes gets a new lease on life and becomes something more modern and highly engaging.
Every tune has it’s own lovely thing going on but if I have to choose some favorites it will be the lyrical ”I’ll Never Smile Again” that features both Rivers’ round and deep tenor as well as his high soaring soprano, ”Detour Ahead”, a relaxing mood setter, also featured on Bill Evans’ ”Waltz For Debby”, and I love the playful flute playing on ”Secret Love” which is a bright and hopeful conclusion to this album.
