”Moon Flight” by Rashied Ali on Survival SR 109

A favorite from Ali.

My third Rashied Ali title on the Survival label, which he founded in 1972. Relatively accessible stuff. You could say it’s post-bop infused avant-garde with two beautiful ballads present as well. Ali’s patented swirling drum patterns on the more up-tempo stuff is a joy to behold. His ability to fill the space with intricate rhythmic chaos while maintaining cohesion is beautiful. He seems to have a feathery touch around the drum kit but still producing intensity and power. His brush work on one of the before mentioned ballads, which is Waldron’s ”Soul Eyes”, adds so much texture and the tune is a clear highlight. The brushes are used on the other ballad as well, Coltranes ”Naima” (spelled ”Niama” here), which also is a highlight.

Ali is one of my favorite drummers, no doubt. The rest of the bunch are James Vass on alto and soprano sax and flute, Marvin Blackman on tenor and soprano sax, Charles Eubanks on piano and Benny Wilson on double bass. A great group that I have not heard before I believe. So satisfying to explore new players performing at such a high level. The notion that is becoming apparent is to dive deeper into their respective works.

If you haven’t heard this one, give it a try, even if you’re hesitant towards the avant-garde. I think you’ll find enjoyment here. Try the ballads. It’s one of my absolute favorite releases on Survival for sure.

”New Directions in Modern Music” by The Rashied Ali Quartet on Survival SR 104

The Rashied Ali titles on Survival are some of my favorite avant stuff.

My second Rashied Ali title on Survival. This is one is live and the energy of this quartet is superb. The sole tune on side 1 is a burner and the whole band is on fire. The alto performance of Carlos Ward on that tune is amazing. I’m a big fan of Ali’s playing. His drumming is quite delicate sounding even when in full swinging motion. The rest of the rhythm section is killing it as well, with Fred Simmons on piano (stepping in for the quartet’s regular pianist Don Pullen who couldn’t attend) and Stafford James on double bass. The portion on the first tune with the piano solo and the superb bass behind it is something to behold. Brilliant. Contains a top notch drum solo as well by Ali.

Side 2 features a single lengthy tune as well and features Ward on flute, and he masters that instrument to a tee as well. Overall, I would describe the music on this album as accessible avant-garde. It’s just a total privilege to sit here and listen to this stuff. One of my favorite finds of the year.

Will try and find the rest of the Ali stuff on Survival as well, but they are hard to come by for sure and not easy to find at a reasonable price. Very happy to have been able to find two of them so far.

The cover (was still in shrink) is one of my favorites in jazz. Love everything about it. The razor thin vinyl is in lovely shape and the spindle hole was like new and I had to give the record a little push down as it was so tight. Beautiful condition all around.

For all lovers of the avant-garde this is essential, and to those who are just getting into it, I would suggest you give this one a listen. I think it’s a great introduction to this genre as it’s not too crazy. Just great jazz.

Happy Easter! 🐣

"Swift are the Winds of Life" by The Rashied Ali & Leroy Jenkins Duo on Survival SR 112

A rare combination of just drums and violin.

I’ve been getting into the Rashied Ali stuff on Survival lately. Managed to acquire two titles and this one arrived today. It features a duo with Ali and violinist Leroy Jenkins. This is very special stuff. I absolutely love the violin in avant-garde jazz. And this duo format with just drums and violin is brilliant. Can’t think of any other title with this combination.

I really enjoy Alis’ drumming. One of my favorite avant-garde drummers. His playing is inspiring and makes me want to pick up the sticks again. Technically great and intricate approach. Really dig the organic sound of his kit as well.

Never listened to Leroy Jenkins before, but he is obviously very gifted and his ability to fit in this setting is magical. I love the violin since way back, but in a classical setting. For example Paganini and so on. Here we get to enjoy it in an avant-garde setting and it works amazingly.

The condition of the vinyl is great. The sound is very natural and organic. Love the label design that Survival did. Beautiful.

I’m definitely leaning more and more towards the avant-garde and my explorations into the genre will continue full speed ahead.

Looking forward to the other Ali title. coming this week as well, hopefully.
