”Puttin’ It Together” by The New Elvin Jones Trio on Blue Note BST 84282

Elvin, Jimmy and Joe in top form.

Lo and behold, I’m posting an original Blue Note again. It’s been a while. This is a lovely title featuring a favorite format of mine, the pianoless sax trio (some flute is also present). Elvin, Jimmy Garrison and Joe Farrell performs a raw and organic set of tunes which appeals to me with it’s stripped down feel and natural sound. This album was Elvin’s first on Blue Note as a leader. Recorded and released in 1968 which makes it my latest Blue Note thus far in terms of the release date. Never owned a Liberty Blue Note before. Hopefully there will be some more landing on my shelves in the years to come. Will keep my eyes peeled for the second album by this great trio as well, also on Blue Note.

Elvin is a favorite drummer of mine and you immediately hear it’s him. The earthy and natural sound of his kit is truly a signature sound. Garrison is a cat I’ve loved for a long time. His solos are always great, his choice of notes are always special, and the sound he extracts from his double bass is big, warm and round. In this setting the bass gets quite pronounced, which is always a plus. Joe Farrell is brilliant on tenor, soprano, flute and piccolo. On the tenor he’s Coltrane-esque to me, but his own man nonetheless. Will have to explore his catalogue in depth.

Highly recommended.

"Dear John C." by Elvin Jones on Impulse! A-88

Superb stuff from Elvin.

Yesterday was Elvin’s birthday so I figured I’d post this new arrival today. This album is such a gem in the Impulse catalogue. Probably quite underrated. The band on display is a lovely bunch, consisting of Elvin on drums, the brilliant Charlie Mariano on alto sax, Roland Hanna or Hank Jones on piano and the always excellent Richard Davis on double bass.

The material recorded for the two sessions on February 23 & 25 in 1965 is varied and highly enjoyable. The sound is sublime, as you would expect from a Van Gelder recording from this era.

Been looking for this title for a long time and it seems quite rare. Very happy to have acquired this wonderful sounding copy.

I have some exciting weeks ahead as I will be buying an additional turntable equipped with a stereo cartridge so I can also listen to stereo recordings. A whole new world will be opening for me. I have started to get into a lot of stuff from the 70’s, so I will be concentrating on looking for albums from that era. I have actually already secured a great album from 1975 which will be the first one on the platter to test out the new equipment.

Some Impulse! candy.

I’ve started to explore the Impulse! label for real. I’ve bought a couple of titles. There’s a lot of wonderful albums to discover, as well as musicians you haven’t heard before. The type of jazz released on this label comes with great variety, which makes it interesting and you’ll discover new or/and different flavors with each release. I’m intrigued with what I’ve heard thus far and I will continue to explore the label with great excitement. I will of course seek out all the Coltrane albums but there is so much more to sink your teeth in.

I’ve fallen in love with the rhythm section of Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison. Elvin Jones is just phenomenal. I love his style, touch and sound. So the LP on display here is right up my alley. It’s a very diverse album with a nice blend of tunes. The personnel are Elvin Jones on drums, Jimmy Garrison on double bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, Sonny Simmons on alto sax and English horn, Charles Davis on baritone sax and Prince Lasha on clarinet and flute. Three of the cats I haven’t heard before, and it is interesting to soak in their different styles, especially when they deliver some stuff on instruments I do not often listen to; like the english horn, clarinet and flute. They all sound great. Highly recommended.

I love the packaging of these old Impulse! releases. The beautiful, heavy gatefold covers with the images and liner notes inside are oustanding. The iconic orange and black labels. I have a white label promo copy of this LP and those labels are very cool as well. The sound of the vinyl is brilliant. One of the best sounding records I’ve heard. It sounds so organic and powerful. Couldn’t ask for more. I would urge anyone who hasn’t delved into the Impulse! catalogue yet to do so. I think you will find many great and interesting titles. And if you’re looking for 1st pressings they won’t cost you a bloody fortune. Much more reasonable prices.

How about you guys, what’s your take on the Impulse! label and do you have some favorite titles you’d like to share?

Vacation time will soon be here and I look forward to that immensely. To get some warm sun on my face cause here in Stockholm the sun has forsaken us. I hope you will have a nice Sunday and enjoy some jazz. Stay tuned for more great albums from the collection. Cheers!
