I’m on a mission to try and find more of Ted Curson’s stuff. I have a couple of his albums since before and I have been looking for this one on Fontana for quite a while. Very happy to file this original mono sample copy which is in outstanding condition.
The first tune, which is a Curson original called ”Kassim”, has this oriental flavor to it which I love. The trumpet solo is amazing on that one and it is probably my favorite tune on the album. The title track, a tribute to Eric Dolphy, is another favorite. We also have ”Quicksand” which also has that oriental flavor.
The band backing the leader is great and features longtime collaborator Bill Barron on tenor sax and clarinet, Herb Bushler on double bass and Dick Berk on drums. Love the pianoless format of this quartet.
Really dig the front duo of Curson and Barron and the way they blend together. I need to keep my eye out for more of the music they released together.
